A new five-year farm bill will run about 1,000 pages and include a vast array of programs, so the most likely action is an extension of the current bill and possibly an emergency aid package, according to the latest Independent Banker magazine.
Background: The 2018 farm bill is currently being redrafted after its 2023 expiration and extension through Sept. 30, 2024, the article notes. Congress must decide by the end of this month whether to extend the bill for another year or pass a new bill.
ICBA Action: ICBA recently joined 300 farm-related organizations in urging Congress to enact a new bill this year. The groups also laid out principles for Congress to consider in developing a bill, including enhancing USDA guaranteed loan programs, treating community banks equitably to ensure access to all relevant credit programs, and reducing regulatory burdens.
More: The December edition of Independent Banker also includes articles on this year’s best community banks to work for, financial goals of Gen Z, building a better branch, compliance updates, technology, and more.
Access: The magazine is available on the Independent Banker website and via the digital edition.
Digital Subscription: Community bankers also can subscribe to Independent Banker’s newsletter to receive the magazine via email.
