Washington, D.C. (March 9, 2022) — Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) President and CEO Rebeca Romero Rainey issued the following statement on the White House’s executive order on digital asset risks and opportunities.
“ICBA supports a comprehensive, coordinated approach to regulating digital assets and is closely reviewing the White House’s executive order and what it will mean for community banks and the customers and communities they serve.
“Harmonizing digital asset regulations will ensure consistent oversight of cryptocurrency service providers, establish clear guidelines for permissible bank activities, and avoid gaps to minimize the risk of regulatory arbitrage. Unregulated cryptocurrency would disintermediate community banks—undermining their ability to support local customers and communities—while threatening consumer privacy and protections as well as financial stability.
